Environmental Design

Environmental design bridges the gap between brand, architecture, and the built environment. Successful signage and environmental graphics do more than communicate information. They guide people through space, reinforce identity, and shape how a place is experienced.

For more than a decade, my work in environmental design has spanned a wide range of projects including exterior signage, interior wayfinding systems, architectural graphics, and illuminated signage. Each project requires a thoughtful balance of design, fabrication knowledge, and technical planning to ensure the final installation performs both visually and structurally.

From early concept development through fabrication coordination and installation planning, my role has often involved collaborating with architects, fabricators, and brand teams to bring signage systems to life in ways that feel integrated, durable, and intentional within their environments.

Exterior Design

Exterior signage plays a critical role in establishing a brand’s physical presence within the built environment. Well-designed signage must balance visual impact with architectural harmony, ensuring the final installation complements its surroundings while maintaining strong brand visibility.

My experience spans a wide range of exterior signage types, from custom neon and illuminated channel letters to large-scale architectural signage and LED-driven installations. Each project requires careful consideration of materials, finishes, lighting techniques, and structural integration to ensure durability and visual clarity across a variety of conditions.

One of the most rewarding aspects of environmental design is seeing these projects come to life through fabrication and installation, transforming concepts into lasting physical landmarks.

The Application

Designing exterior signage begins with understanding the environment in which the signage will live. This includes evaluating architectural context, site visibility, traffic patterns, and municipal signage codes and regulations.

Each project must also balance aesthetic ambition with practical considerations such as fabrication feasibility, lighting performance, installation requirements, and long-term durability. Careful planning ensures that the final solution aligns with the client’s business goals while remaining within budget and compliant with local requirements.

The Solution

Through research, collaboration, and detailed planning, exterior signage solutions are developed to integrate seamlessly with their surroundings while maintaining strong brand presence.

Material selection, lighting strategies, and structural design are carefully considered to ensure durability, visibility, and visual cohesion with the architectural environment. Working closely with fabrication and installation teams ensures that every detail is executed accurately, resulting in signage that performs effectively and stands the test of time.

Interior Signage

Interior signage plays a vital role in shaping how people move through and experience a space. Beyond simple wayfinding, thoughtful interior signage systems reinforce brand identity while guiding visitors through environments in a clear and intuitive way.

Throughout my career I have designed interior signage systems across a wide range of industries including retail, hospitality, medical, and corporate environments. These projects provide opportunities to explore a variety of materials, finishes, and illumination techniques while creating signage solutions that feel integrated within the architecture.

The Challenge

Interior signage requires balancing clarity and functionality with design sensitivity. Signage must remain visible and intuitive while integrating seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

Designers must consider spatial constraints, architectural finishes, lighting conditions, accessibility requirements, and local code regulations while maintaining a cohesive visual system throughout the space.

The Process

Each interior signage system begins with spatial analysis to understand how people navigate the environment. From there, wayfinding hierarchies and messaging structures are developed to guide visitors clearly through the space.

Material selections, mounting methods, and fabrication techniques are then explored to ensure durability and consistency across all signage elements. Through collaboration with architects, contractors, and fabrication teams, the final system is refined and prepared for production and installation.

HomeStreet Bank

As part of a comprehensive brand refresh for HomeStreet Bank, their physical branch environments underwent a significant transformation to reflect the updated brand identity.

Working alongside the design agency leading the refresh and HomeStreet’s internal leadership team, I collaborated closely with our Art Director to help develop a cohesive signage package that could be deployed across multiple locations.

This work involved translating the new brand system into physical signage solutions that balanced architectural integration, brand consistency, and fabrication practicality.

The Client

HomeStreet required a signage system that could support its refreshed brand identity while remaining adaptable to the unique conditions of each branch location.

This meant developing signage solutions that could maintain visual consistency while accommodating varying architectural layouts, local regulations, and installation conditions.

The Solution

Working collaboratively with the agency and internal stakeholders, we developed a flexible signage system designed to maintain brand consistency while adapting to individual branch environments.

Detailed signage plans, shop drawings, and fabrication guidance ensured that each location could implement the refreshed identity with clarity and precision. The result was a cohesive environmental system that strengthened brand presence across HomeStreet’s physical locations.

Starbucks Coffee

My work with Starbucks began with the development of exterior signage packages for new retail locations. Over time, the scope expanded to include more complex signage initiatives, including projects tied to the launch and expansion of the Starbucks Reserve brand.

These projects ranged from traditional storefront signage to custom architectural signage elements designed for flagship environments, including work surrounding the original Reserve concept near the Pike Street Roastery and locations surrounding the company’s SODO headquarters.

The Strategy

Each signage project required close coordination with the Starbucks design and brand teams to ensure that every element aligned with the company’s evolving retail strategy.

This involved exploring materials, fabrication methods, and lighting solutions that would integrate naturally within Starbucks’ architectural environments while reinforcing the brand’s design language.

The Solution

Through collaboration with Starbucks’ internal teams and fabrication partners, signage solutions were developed that balanced brand expression with durability and architectural sensitivity.

Material exploration, lighting techniques, and fabrication detailing played an important role in ensuring each sign felt intentional within its environment. The result was signage that not only supported retail visibility but also contributed to the overall design experience of each location.
